about

Alfa Yaya orig. performed by Amadu Bansang Jobarteh

Alpha Yaya Diallo (1850–1912) led a resistance campaign against the French.

Not all people are born with equal abilities or moral values. Some are compassionate; some are not. Some are good; some are bad. Alfa Yaya Diallo was the name of a Fula ruler in Guinea, before the time of colonial rule. He had great compassion for his fellow man. He did everything he could for the powerless, the orphans, the disabled, the women who had never married. All these people were so grateful to him, that they would weep when they saw him. The childless woman, the fatherless child, all wept before Alfa Yaya, so moved were they by his generosity.

But not everyone liked what he was doing. Alfa Yaya had enemies too. At that time, in Guinea, the law was, if you killed someone, your punishment was death. So one night his enemies killed a man, and left the body next to Alfa Yaya’s house. The next day, the word got round that Alfa Yaya was being accused of murder. So he was arrested, and taken to be hung in a public place. This was a bitter day for all the people whom he had helped. They gathered around, and wept bitterly.
