25 minutes in North Vancouver

by Derek Gripper

I was in Vancouver for a show at Capilano University in January of 2019. The morning before the concert I visited a wonderful record store called Revolution Records I had visited on a previous trip. I played a few pieces to people in the store and bought an Ali Farka Touré record. Andy Warren, who works there, invited me to come down to his studio, Crew Studios, and record something. I didn't really have anything I wanted to record but I agreed.

A day later I was sitting in front of a few microphones. I had just walked in the door and everything was already perfectly set up. I asked Andy to hit record and I played without stopping for 25 minutes. I didn't think about it much and I had absolutely no plan in mind. I started in one tuning and worked my way through a few others, finding ways to link one tuning to the next.

This is that record. All of the material is improvised and there is not a single edit. It's quite simply 25 minutes in North Vancouver.
